The WEEE system in Italy

The Directive

Implementing the European Directive no. 2002/96 through enactment of the Legislative decree no. 151/2005, also Italy has started the eco-sustainable handling of the treatment of waste of electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE).

Responsibility

The responsibility for end-life electric and electronic equipment: this is the fundamental principle introduced by the legislation.

The collective systems

ERP Italia, together with the other collective systems operating in Italy, undertakes this responsibility on behalf of the producers, dealing with all operations for the WEEE management, from the collection points to the treatment centres. In this way, most of the WEEE once ending up in the landfill of waste is now taken back and reused in the production processes.

Working for the environment

In 2009, approximately 200,000 tonnes of WEEE were collected in Italy, out of which 10% collected by ERP Italia alone (21,000 tonnes). To understand the significance of the above data we just have to reckon that in terms of CO2 emissions, this equals to 1,500,000 tonnes, equivalent to the electricity consumptions of one town of 300,000 inhabitants or to the consumption of 300,000 cars per year.
